SoCS 4/6/16 - Book

https://lindaghill.com/2016/05/13/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-may-1416/

Well it's Sunday now but I've missed taking part in  SoCS the last few weeks so I was determined to get a post done this weekend.  If you would like to take part click here to visit Linda's site for all the details and the links of other bloggers taking part.

This week's prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: Book. Use any meaning of the word as your theme, or simply mention the word “book” in your post. Enjoy!

Well I couldn't pass up this challenge as I've nearly always got a book on the go, if not two.  I'm actually between books right now as I've just finished one and not yet decided what to read next.  I follow two online book groups and I'm also working my way through a BBC list of 100 books to read.

I always used to buy books but since I gave up work I've taken to using the library much more.  I also use the Kindle app for some books, especially special offers that I'd normally read.

I hate giving up on a book but sometimes the book club choices can be challenging but I do like a challenge.  That was one of the reasons for working my way through the BBC list although there are some books on that list that may defeat me.  I've given up on A Suitable Boy twice as I couldn't keep track of the family trees but as my brother-in-law, who is blind, has managed to get through it I hope that at some point I will get to the end.  My mother-in-law, if she was struggling with a book, used to skip to the end.  If she liked the ending she would persevere with the book but if she didn't she would give up.  I haven't resorted to that tactic yet.

I love a good thriller but have also worked my way through the Harry Potter series and The Lord of the Rings.  (I refused to watch the films until I'd read the books.)  The book that has taken me the longest time to read was Catch 22.  I use Goodreads to keep track of my reading and I also have a notebook where I write reviews and notes as I find that helps to keep the story in my head.

There are always books on my bedside table, usually my current read but I also have a copy of the bible there plus a book my daughter gave me "14,000 things to be happy about".  Not sure what she was trying to tell me!

  1. I read all the time too, and should have started using Good Reads ages ago. I don't always remember I've read a book already until I get into it again.

  2. Your mother in law's strategy of skipping to the end is an interesting last resort. I've often use it for self-improvement books but not so much for fiction, though I have been known to skip overly long descriptions. And it's sweet that your daughter wants you to be happy. That's my take on it, anyway.

  3. When I read "real" books (now I almost always read exclusively on my Nook) I used to skip to the end too. I just couldn't wait. I don't do that anymore. I have a problem giving up on books too. I will finish it even if I hate it. I wish I didn't have to do that. There are just too many good books out there to keep reading a book you don't like. But my OCD won't let me quit. I am on Goodreads too. That is where I track what books I've read. But I only started using it in recent years. And these aren't the years that I have read the most. If I find a book I Have already read I just add it to that list. Sometimes I am far into a book before I realize I know what is going on...thus, probably read it before!
