G is for Grandparents

#AtoZChallenge 2019 Tenth Anniversary blogging from A to Z challenge letter

This year I decided not to tie myself to a theme.  I wanted to do something that felt more like writing rather than composing posts.  I didn’t want it to be a story that had to be followed from start to finish so what I’ve ended up with are: “Conversations in my Head”.

Morning Wendy!

Are you sure Alice?  It doesn’t feel like morning to me.

Well it’s after 7 am and there is an empty tea mug on your bedside table so it must be morning.

If you say so.

I do.  And I had all day yesterday to think about what to write for G and I was wondering….

Yes?

What’s it like being a Grandparent?  I mean it must be difficult because it means you’re old and have less years ahead of you than behind.

Alice why are you so obsessed with my age.  I know I have a big birthday looming but it’s not that big.  There’s still life in me yet.

You wouldn’t know it most mornings!

Yes well I’m more of a night owl although not so much since I started looking after the Grandchildren.

But do you like it?  Only I’m not sure I’m ever going to age or marry or have my own children let alone see them have theirs.

Oh Alice that’s sad.  Being a Grandparent is a wonderful thing.  I love it.

Really?

Yes.  I did worry about that.  You see we’ve had lots of babies in our extended family already and although I’ve enjoyed giving them a cuddle I never really felt that connected to them.  It was very easy giving them back so I did worry that I might be a bit, I don’t know, not that soppy about my own when the time came.  But thankfully I was wrong.

Well it was a bit full on when Nathan arrived.

Yes I didn’t expect to be in the delivery room at the time but then no one expected him to arrive so early.  He caught us all by surprise and it was very scary at first but now he’s 2 and doing so well.  He’s begun to lose the baby look and become a little boy who repeats everything like a parrot and is most happy when he’s playing with a ball.  Especially if Granga is kicking it back.

Granga?

He can’t always say Grandpa.  And I was always going to be Nanny like my Mum but then he started calling me Nana and it seemed so cute and it’s kind of stuck.

But what about the other two?

Noah and Rory?  Well of course I love them too.  Just as much.  Of course I worried about that too.  Especially after spending so much time with Nathan at first and with Noah being that bit further away.  But yes there is just as much love for them as there is Nathan.  Love it seems doesn’t have limits.

That’s a bit gooey sounding.

Well you brought this subject up and I could talk about being a Grandparent all day.

Well you can if you like.  I’ll be thinking about what to prompt you for H!

  1. That's a difficult theme for me ! As Toby has helicopter parents I never had the opportunity (neither DIL's mother) to babysit when he was little. There was no connection. Now it's nice he is 8 and we became accomplices. (doing things only Grandmas do behind mums back, lol)

  3. I, too, am Nana to my two grandchildren. We never thought it would be possible for my daughter to have children so they are an added bonus to our lives You are so right about endless love.

  4. There's nothing like it- my youngest grandchild lives with me and the oldest will be 21 this fall!

  5. Not grandparents yet but we had our youngest late and she just turned 22 so I feel like I need some space before the grandparent thing, especially since she and our son still live at home. We've never really had that empty nest experience. Nicely done G.

  6. I agree-there is nothing quite like it and it's a bit hard to put exactly why into words. You're right though, there is plenty of love to go round!

  7. I think being a grand parent is a little like being a parent. Biology cuts in and that indefinable something cuts in when your child or a grand child is born and you are automatically 'hook' and committed to making sure this little person is loved and succeeds. It's all nature, Alice, all nature.
