#SoCS & JusJoJan - 25/1/20 - Last Call

Your prompt for #JusJoJan and Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “last call.” Talk about the enterprise (sales or service) conducted by the last phone call you received from a business you’re not associated with (i.e. your workplace), or talk about that phone conversation itself. Have fun!

These challenges are hosted by Linda G Hill.

Well I'm not employed anymore so I'd have to refer to calls I receive at home although I don't actually get many calls.  Before you start feeling sorry for me I would add that I get countless communications on my mobile from various family members/friends all day long courtesy of Whatsapp or text message.  Why do we not talk more?

Even the phone calls I do get are often automated voice calls, initially at least.  Anyhow there are two recent ones that stick in my mind.

The first was an automated voice telling me it was HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs - think Tax Department) and that there was a warrant out for my arrest due to a fraud investigation.  I needed to press 1 to speak to the officer dealing with the case or I would find police at my door!

Yes it did sound official and it did sound scary BUT I am too savvy to be taken in and I hung up.  Investigations led me to this where unfortunately it seems that many people have been scared enough by the call to actually follow the instructions and subsequently be scammed of lots of money.

The second one came this week concerning my Amazon Prime subscription.  Again it was a similar scam (details here) which I did not fall for as I do not have a Prime subscription.  It did have me going to check out I hadn't accidentally set up a free trial and that my account looked ok.

Both these calls have confirmed my usual stance on phone numbers I don't recognise - ignore them.  If they're important and they really need to speak to me they'll leave a message or contact me some other way.

  1. My new phone allows me to automatically send any calls not in my contacts directly to voicemail. What a relief. It does mean I must add my doctor and my realtor, etc., to my contacts but that is a small price to pay.

  2. I do exactly the same, I don't believe anything on a phone ! Imagine I won 1 mill £ in the English lottery where I never played and they wanted my adress to send me a cheque lol !! I told them that I am already millionaire and they should give my cheque to an animal shelter ! Crazy !

  3. I am not a phone talker so text most of the time too. FB Messenger gets a lot of attention too.

  4. They're running the same scam with the Internal Revenue Service here. I think it's even the same bunch out of India that's doing it.

  5. First of all I just wanted to say I don't know how you manage to post each day. You must be so organised. Telephone/email scams just seem so common. Unfortunately numerous people seem to be taken in by the spiel.

  6. It's sad to think that some people believe these scams but I guess enough do or they'd stop trying. I love the last quote..."calling five more times isn't going to make me answer" LOL.
