C is for Carpets (A-Z Challenge 2020)

In January of this year my hubby and I decided that it was time to move on to the next stage of our lives and move house.  I deliberated long and hard about whether it was a good move to take part in the A-Z Challenge this year (pun intended) given that we could be very busy, but decided on balance that having something to focus on might not be a bad idea.  Of course the decision on a theme was much easier to make – Moving House!

Then Covid-19 put a stop to any ideas of moving so I’ve had to regroup and rethink my posts.  Which means I’m not as prepared as I’d liked to have been but here goes:

C is for Carpets

To have or have not?  Apart from our kitchen and bathrooms all our rooms are carpeted.  Which is fine.  But of course carpets need replacing.  Laminate/wooden floors seem easier but of course some maintenance may be required.

And what if you like a house that has recently been renovated with lovely new carpets – that you hate?  I’m trying to be more eco-friendly – reusing where possible and trying not to just throw things away and into landfill.

When I was preparing this post we had found a house we liked which had a balance of both – flooring downstairs but carpets upstairs.  And the carpet was very neutral.  We probably wouldn’t have had to replace any of it very quickly although some of it was looking a bit worn – particularly where there wa definite evidence of a cat in the house!

But it wasn't to be.  We did place an offer on the house just before Covid-19 had us locked down but the owners, understandably, accepted an offer from someone who was chain free.  Then everything got put on hold anyway so who knows what might happen in the future.

Hopefully those people who are in chains will be able to complete their purchases and we will be able to find another house.  With or without carpets.

What’s your preference?  Carpet or hard flooring with rugs in appropriate places?

  1. A bit of a mixture. Mainly carpet but not in bathrooms, kitchen or dining room. Grandchildren love to roll around on the carpets as they don't have carpets at home.

  2. Our house doesn't have carpets. Of course a number of people here do have, it is comfortable to walk on during winter, when the floor otherwise would be very cold. We manage during winter by wearing slippers.

  3. Sorry you lost the house you liked. I don't like carpet. We had them all removed in our old house and loved it. This house (three years now, so I can't say new) only has carpet in the two guest rooms. We have tile in the two bathrooms, vinyl in the kitchen, hardwood in the living/dining areas and laminate in our bedroom and the den. I like dusting and mopping and now worrying about dirty wall-to-wall carpet. At least our guest rooms don't get much traffic. Keep us posted!!

  4. We always had good luck with Pergo, a laminated wood floor covering, and we replaced the carpet in the living room with it. We also have it in the master bedroom, and a different brand of laminate (I think it's Armstrong) in my office (the smallest bedroom). We have as little carpet in the house as possible: turns out it gave us a real flea problem...
