Q is for Queens & Quiet

This year I decided not to tie myself to a theme.  I wanted to do something that felt more like writing rather than composing posts.  I didn’t want it to be a story that had to be followed from start to finish so what I’ve ended up with are: “Conversations in my Head”.

Not now Alice.  I need some quiet.

You always want quiet but you haven’t been quiet much this week.  Your brain has been very busy.  And the house is noisier too.  With strange people here.

They are not strange people Alice.  They are my son’s in-laws and they are lovely.  They’ve come a long way to visit them and I’m just trying to make them feel at home.

Feel at home?  Then why did you try and have the house looking all pristine and like a hotel?

I just wanted it clean and tidy Alice, like a home from home.

And why are they staying here and not with your son?

Because they don’t have the space.

Well anyone would think you were expecting Royalty the way you were chasing around the house.  Talking of which, do you think the Queen will send herself a telegram if she gets to be 100?

I have no idea Alice but I wouldn’t think so.

Why, because you don’t think she’ll get to 100?

Oh I think that’s highly likely.  Her mother lived to be 101 don’t forget.

Poor Charles.  He’ll probably finally get to be King and then pop his clogs!  What a life.

Well yes it’s sad but at least he is more popular now and it’s less likely that people will be pushing for him to pass the crown over to his son.

I don’t like Queens.

Why not Alice?

They can order you to be beheaded and that must be a horrible way to die.

Well I don’t think our Queen will be doing that to anyone, although there are a few politicians she’s had to deal with during her reign that she might have wanted to dispatch.  I’m she would have loved saying “Off with his head!” or “Her head” of course.

You’re not going to mention the B word are you Wendy?

Absolutely not.  Although of course preparing these posts in advance means I have no idea what state the country will be in by the time this is published.  We might even be a republic so there would be no Queen.

Well I for one wouldn’t miss her.
