Wednesday Hodgepodge 6/5/14

Hodgepodge is brought to you courtesy of From this side of the pond

 1. What's a phrase your mother often said to you? If you're a parent, is this something you now say to your own children?  It's hard to remember exact phrases but we were always aware of Mum using words like thingymabob and whatchacallit when she couldn't remember the right word.  It was funny until dementia set in and then she would use them more or she would just struggle to find any word.  Hopefully I don't use those words too much although I know a phrase of mine is "I was going to say" when something's already been said.  I try and catch myself from doing it but I usually fail.

2. What is a scent you associate with your mother or your childhood home?  Magnolia.  She liked it and whenever anyone bought her bath products it was usually magnolia.  As she got older and was concerned about not smelling "like an old lady" she would be very liberal with her talcum powder.  It got everywhere.

3. What's an activity you remember always doing with your mother (or someone who was a mother figure in your life)?  Dancing lessons.  Mum would usually be the one to take me.  I started with ballroom classes but then moved on to ballet, tap and modern.

4. Flared jeans, maxi dresses, and jumpsuits are 70's fashion trends back this spring. Are you on board? Which trend would you be most inclined to try? For the men...flared corduroys, wide-collared shirts, and floral prints...what say you?   Umm I remember them the first time around and won't be going there again!  Give me a straight legged pair of jeans and a comfy top anyday.

5. May 6th is Teacher Appreciation Day and also Nurse Appreciation Day. Is there a nurse or teacher  you have especially appreciated along the way? Tell us why?  One of my sister-in-laws in a nurse and it's good to have someone with medical knowledge in the family.

6. If I came by your house, what would I find on your fridge door?  Right now there are a lot of magnets which hold a variety of things including shopping receipts waiting to check off against the credit card statement, an ongoing shopping list, voting card for tomorrow's election, postcard we recieved, coupons for local shop, tradesmens cards, a list of foods the kids partners either can't or won't eat umm I guess it's a bit overloaded!  (And I didn't mention any of the things on the top of the fridge!)

7. Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana made her royal entrance on Saturday, May 2nd. On a scale of 1-10, how much attention did you give to all the news coverage? 1=Who's Charlotte? 10=sat glued to the telly, cuppa in hand.  I'm somewhere in the middle.  I wanted to know about the birth and the details but I wasn't glued to the TV.  Hubby was definitely a minus 1 (He hates all the coverage of the royal family or celebrities.)  I think you'd struggle to find too many people here who haven't heard about Charlotte, particularly as it was a holiday weekend so not a lot of news apart from the election and we're all fed up with that so anything else was a welcome relief.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.  This is my first Hodgepodge.  Had the time to do it now the A - Z challenge is over.  Looking forward to hopping around to see what others have written.

  3. So nice to see you in the HP today! I had to smile at the list of foods people won't eat : ) My son-in-law is not particular and neither are my girls, but my youngest daughter's boyfriend doesn't like mayonaise, cream cheese, or sour cream so I try to keep that in mind. Enjoy your day!

  7. So glad you joined in today. I, too, found it funny that you had a list posted of the foods that folks won't eat. You deserve a big award for that. I just fix it and if they don't like it, well, that's just tough. I fix enough that everyone should be happy.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  9. Funny, my mom would not let us get away with saying "thingamabob" or "Whatchamacallit". We had to find the right word if it took till the next day. And I grew up to be a stickler with my kids to be clear what they meant.

    Happy weekend to you.

  11. I've never been much of a slave to fashion. If it fits me and I think it looks nice I wear it. Whether it's "dressy," "casual," or "play clothes" they must be comfortable. Thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment.

  12. Happy FIRST Hodgepodge! Thanks for visiting my blog (Our Side of the Mountain)! Magnolia...a sweet smell! I think my kids would associate me with lavender. I'm not big with perfume, but I buy a lot of lavender scented soaps and cleaners.Happy Mother's Day!

  13. Hi, Thank you for stopping over. You are a no-reply so I couldn't comment back to you. Yes I am lost not being able to put things on my frig. It is a built in white frig and they use panels that I think might be plastic. I love magnets. I am very into the Royal Family so I was checking things online like crazy. Welcome to Wednesday Hodgepodge!
