Wednesday Hodgepodge 9/3/16

Wednesday's Hodgepodge is brought to us courtesy of Joyce at  From this side of the pond

Pop over there to see other posts and if you want to join in add the link to your Hodgepodge blog post to the Linky List at the end of Joyce's post and don’t forget to visit at least your neighbours on the list.
Have fun!

1. March is National Women's History Month. In that vein, who are three women who've been influential in your life? How so?
Well I’m sure if I thought hard enough I could think of some famous women that have influenced my life – suffragettes for a start because otherwise I wouldn’t have the vote.  But I decided to look closer to home on this one and immediately these 3 people spring to mind:

My maternal Grandmother – she taught me a lot of things including crochet and knitting but she also showed me how not to be.  She was quite selfish and self-centred at times and I didn’t want to be like that.

My mother – she was the opposite of her Mother so set me a really good example.

My daughter – she is my eldest child and therefore has had a massive impact on my life.  I can still remember the first time I was left at home with her on my own, just the two of us, and realising what a great responsibility that was.  I’ve tried to combine the experiences gained from my Mother and Grandmother in her upbringing but also realised that this parenting experience is ongoing and I’m forever learning, sometimes from her.

2. In what ways do you think women have it easier than men?
I don’t think we do.  We’re still fighting for equality on lots of issues but I think we need to accept that we are different.  You cannot always make the playing field level.  Life can be hard.  Decisions can be tough but sometimes you have to factor in the inherent differences between men and women.

3. What do you need most right now: faith, love, hope, or peace?
Faith

4. Do you have a collection? If so, what do you collect and why?
I don’t collect anything consciously.  I’m trying to declutter my house so collections don’t really fit that model.  However, I seem to have a lot of magazines and articles from magazines sitting in files.  I also have a lot of books.  I’m not good at getting rid of books even though with most of them I know I won’t read them again.  This weekend we finally got ourselves down to the library to rejoin.  I used to be a member years back but I was always running up fines because I never got the books back on time.  Now I’m not working I don’t have that excuse so hopefully that will encourage my reading but also reduce the books I’m hoarding!

5. Plaids, checks, polka dots, stripes...your favorite?
Well looking at my clothes I think it has to be polka dots.

6. In what ways are you the same as your childhood self?
I’m still fairly quiet, reserved and self-contained.  I’m probably a bit more confident but still not good at mixing with strangers or being the centre of attention.  Plus I still worry that I might seem stand offish when really I’m not. Just shy.

7. You're a contestant on the TV game show Jeopardy. What category will you ace?
Well firstly a confession, I have never watched Jeopardy.  Don’t even know if we can get it here in the UK.  So as always in these sorts of predicaments I googled it.  I think I’d be pretty good on World Geography, maybe Science possibly Literature.  But that’s mainly because they’re the sort of quizzes I do on Sporcle quite a lot.  But mental maths would be good for me if that category exists.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

We welcomed the 8th Great Grandchild into hubby’s family on Monday – a bouncing baby boy (9lb 6 oz).  Sadly he won’t get to meet his Great Grandmother but he’s still a Great Grandchild to us.  (I’ll pass on being a Great Aunt!)

  1. I've gotten ruthless with the magazines around here. We still get a couple, but I resist the urge to hang on to them. I do tear out recipes and file them immediately before sending the magazines to recycling. It can get away from me so fast!

  2. Congratulations on the new baby! The only way my grandmother influenced me was not to be anything like her. I grew up with only one grandma and she wasn't a nice person! Maybe that is how I became the grandma I am today! I have a hard time getting rid of books too!

  3. I am so thankful for Pinterest as it has allowed me to let go of magazines. Books are still another story. My Kindle has helped some with that. Congrats on the new baby! Have a toad-ally awesome day!

I think we have several similarities in our personalities :)

  6. I can sure identify with your answer to #6! When hearing someone thought I was arrogant, why I was astonished ... humiliated, too.

Congrats on your newest family member. I hope he's wonderfully squishable! :)))
