The background to the challenge can be found here

Your prompt for JusJoJan 2019, January 7th is brought to you by Tara! Click here to find her last post and say hi while you’re there! Tara’s word for our prompt today is “memento.” Use it anywhere in your post or make it the theme of your post. Have fun!

I try not to keep lots of mementos.  I'm trying not to have lots of clutter in the house and keeping lots of mementos can add to that.  When my Mum had to be admitted to a nursing home I had to clear out her home.  She had lots of china pigs.  Shelves of them.  Plus clowns.  Not to mention lots of other knick knacks.  Initially I couldn't bring myself to get rid of them so we stored them in the loft.  After she had passed away we started to deal with Mum's stuff.  Most of the pigs went to a summer fete at the school where I worked.  Along with many of the clowns.  I've kept a couple of the clowns which were actually quite expensive china  ones.  The only pigs I kept were 3 little pink ones.  They're really small and I often carry one of them around with me.

Of course I don't need a memento to remember Mum but I like having something of hers with me.

  1. I think I would have kept the pigs, I love pigs ! Clowns less, they are always bad in crime stories ! I participated too and on Tuesday too, but Wednesday I don't understand what to do !

  2. I like to declutter and like you I have got rid of the majority of Mum's things but have held on to the flying ducks. She was a lover of Coronation Street and Hilda Ogden had them on her wall!!

  3. My mom is getting rid of her things while she is still living. Right now she has hardly anything on her walls and no shelves. She says she doesn't want to spend time dusting! My mother-in-law on the other hand has tons of stuff and I can see it is going to be difficult for my husband and his brother to sort through it all. I may have to step in as mediator. Nice one for memento.

  4. I think anyone who has to help clean out someone's home begins to think twice about keeping "stuff". I know I do. I have a t-shirt that was my mom's that I wear a couple of times a month. I hope it never wears out. Great post on mementos!

  5. Mom, who had a houseful of stuff that we had to plow through after she died, said "they're just things." I think a lot of the stuff is still in the boxes we brought back. They're her memories, not mine. My memento of her is her last driver's license...

  6. After having to clean out my mother's house after she died, I'm getting better about not keeping a bunch of mementoes.
