Just Jot It January is led by Linda G. Hill.
There's no prompt for Just Jot it January today as Wednesday is usually "One-Liner" day. As you probably know by now I don't do one lines.
So I'll make a confession instead. Yesterday I gave up on a book. I hate giving up on a book. In fact since I started reading books as part of 2 online book clubs last year I've always finished them.
I'm also slowing working through a BBC big read list and last year I got stuck on Catch 22. It took me ages to finish. I kept picking it up and putting it down. But I was determined to finish it.
What did I give up on? The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson. Was it awful? I couldn't really tell you as I only read a few chapters. I just didn't like the main characters.
It probably sounds as if I just gave up but the book had been hanging around since November. (It's a library book and I've renewed it several times.) One of the clubs gives several book choices each month and I try and read as many as I can. But this means books I've been given are languishing on my TBR shelf.
I've now decided I will only pick one book from the list each month so with my other club that will mean 2 books per month. I'm averaging a book a week. So that will leave time for my own choices.
And it also justified my giving up on a book that I didn't really like.
I do the same nowadays. I have found that if I can not get into a book, I return it. Or lately I had gotten too busy to read all the books I had checked out and renewed from the library, so had to return them unread.
ReplyDeleteI'm returned a couple this week that I hadn't read.
DeleteI didn't used to give up on books very easily but with so many books on my "to be read" list, I stop reading quite early on if something doesn't grab me.
ReplyDeleteI try not to give up on the book challenges but sometimes it can be hard going.
DeleteReading should be an enjoyable activity not a chore so you are quite right to give up on it.
ReplyDeleteI don't like to give up on the challenge books as I want to be able to give a proper review.
DeleteI am learning to not waste time on books that are not working for me. Fortunately, I encountered this with only a handful last year.
